2021, Indonesia Projected to be the World's Largest Geothermal Producer

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) projecting, Indonesia will become the world's largest geothermal power producer by the year 2021. This projection obtainable to see the growth of installed capacity of Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP), which continues to grow rapidly from year to year.

"Based on our analysis, the capacity of PLTP Indonesia will beat the world's largest geothermal power producers, the United States and the Philippines in 2021," said Head of Communications, Public Information Service and Cooperation (KLIK) Bureau of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Kusdiana, Sunday (10/9).


He explained that by 2018 Indonesia will surpass the Philippines to become the world's second largest geothermal energy user in the world by generating geothermal electricity by 2,023.5 MW through the addition of the capacities of PLTP Sarulla (2 x 110 MW), PLTP Karaha (30 MW) , PLTP Sorik Marapi (2 x 20 MW), and PLTP Lumut Balai (55 MW).


Furthermore, based on the roadmap being compiled, Indonesia will become the world's largest geothermal energy producing country in defeating the United States in 2021, with geothermal electricity capacity reaching 3,559.5 MW.
This achievement given the geothermal development in the Philippines has approached the existing reserves and geothermal development in the United States there is no significant increase in the absence of geothermal development incentives there.


Investment Opportunities
Dadan admitted, at present, the utilization of geothermal for the purposes of new power generation is 1,698.5 MW or about 10% of the existing reserves. In fact, as many as 331 geothermal potential locations that have spread in the territory of Indonesia is very strategic for investment and meet national energy needs in accordance with the National Energy Policy (KEN= Kebijakan Energy Nasional ).


"We have 17,506 MW of geothermal reserves and 11,073 MW of resources but have not been optimized, so it is an opportunity for investors as well as meeting the national energy needs," said Dadan.


Dadan further explained, the Government continues to provide geothermal investors ease through the provision of fiscal and non fiscal incentives.And also, the Government has issued a special regulation on geothermal, namely Law no. 21 of 2014 on Geothermal, Government Regulation no. 7 of 2017 on Geothermal for Indirect Use and other technical regulations


"These two regulations change the old mindset that geothermal development can be done in conservation forest areas because it is no longer categorized as a mining business," Dadan said.


Latest, the Government also issued the ESDM Minister regulation No 50 Year 2017 on Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources for the Provision of Electric Power. The important point of the beleid is the refinement related to the Cost of Supply (BPP)


For East region if the local  BPP more bigger than the  National BPP, the price of geothermal electricity is 100% BPP local  so that geothermal electricity price is quite attractive and economical to develop, added Dadan

 

As for the western region, if the BPP is lower than the National BPP then the price of geothermal electricity is determined by a business-to-business negotiation mechanism between the Business Entity and PLN which is of course conducted in an open book that is accountable to measure the actual electricity price based on the cost structure a project.
