JAKARTA - The government is committed to implementing the electric car policy. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ignasius Jonan assessing an electric car is a necessity and an effort to improve national energy security.

"The national energy security policy is an effort as much as possible the energy used in Indonesia must come from within the country," Jonan said in Jakarta, Tuesday (7/31).

The existence of electric cars, continued Jonan, will be able to reduce the import of fuel oil (BBM). Jonan illustrates, if not using an electric car, within the next 10 to 15 years, national fuel consumption will swell from 1.3 - 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd) to around 2 million bpd. In fact, national oil production is only around 800 thousand bpd.

"It cannot produce 800,000 barrels for consumption of 2 million barrels, which is far more difficult," said Minister Jonan.

Jonan explained that the energy source for electric cars is available with a very large amount in the country, so no need to import energy.

"Electricity is from coal, geothermal, wind, water,  sun, as well as the majority of domestic biomass," he concluded.

As is known, the government is preparing a Presidential Decree (Perpres) on the Acceleration Program of Electric Vehicles for Road Transportation. The electric car program is also one of the Indonesian government's commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 29 percent by 2030. (k)
