JAKARTA - Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Tuesday (10/16) morning, reported that an earthquake had occurred southwest of West Aceh Regency, Aceh Province. The earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 5.4 occurring at a depth of 25 km with the epicenter of the earthquake at coordinates 95.76? BT and 3.91? YOU. PVMBG asks people to remain calm and be aware of the occurrence of aftershocks whose energy is estimated to be smaller.

"The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake occurred on Monday, October 15, 2018, at 11:26 p.m. WIB. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 95.76? BT and 3.91? LU, with a magnitude of 5.4 at a depth of 25 km, located 74 km southwest of the District of West Aceh, Aceh, "said the Head of PVMBG, Kasbani.

Geological conditions the closest area to the earthquake center is the west coast of Aceh and the northern part of Simeulue Island. The western coastal region of Aceh is dominated by Quaternary sedimentary rocks. Simelue Island is composed of sedimentary rocks and Tertiary carbonate rocks and Pre-Tertiary rocks, where some of the rocks have weathered. "The rocks that have undergone weathering are decomposed, loose, not compact so that they strengthen the effects of earthquake shocks," Kasbani added.

Regarding the cause of the earthquake, Kasbani explained that based on the location of the epicenter of the earthquake and its depth, the earthquake was associated with subduction activities of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Eurasian Plate.

The impact of the greatest intensity of earthquake shocks will be felt in areas close to the epicenter of the earthquake, then the intensity weakens as distance increases with the epicenter of the earthquake. Based on the BMKG, earthquake shocks were felt in Banda Aceh and Nagan Raya with an intensity of III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity). This earthquake did not cause a tsunami, because the energy is not strong enough to cause deformation under the sea. Until this response was made, there was no information about the damage caused by this earthquake.

PVMBG asks the community to remain calm and follow the directions and information from the local BPBD officers. Don't be provoked by irresponsible issues regarding earthquakes and tsunamis. The community must remain vigilant with the occurrence of aftershocks, which are estimated to have a smaller power. (k)
