Geology Agency: Earthquake shook Papua, No Damage and Victims Friday, October 19 2018

JAKARTA - This afternoon an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 SR shook Papua, precisely at a depth of 85 km, at a distance of 28 km southeast of Sarmi, Papua. The quake, according to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), the Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) happened to be due to the association with Fault activity that ran east-west on the island of Papua. There were no building damage and casualties due to this earthquake.

 

"There has been an earthquake in Southeast Sarmi, Papua Province. Based on information obtained from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), occurred on Friday, October 19, 2018, at 12:55 p.m., 11 WIB. the earthquake is at coordinates 2.66? LS and 139.37? BT with a magnitude of 5.7 SR at a depth of 85 km, at a distance of 28 km southeast of Sarmi, Papua, "said the release received from PVMBG, Friday (10/19).

 

PVMBG estimates that the occurrence of the earthquake is estimated to hit the region composed of tertiary rocks in the form of sedimentary rocks, volcanic rocks, igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks. Earthquake shocks will be felt in quarterly sedimentary rocks and weathered tertiary rocks which are disintegrated, released, unconsolidated and strengthen the shock effect, making them vulnerable to earthquake shocks.

 

There have been no reports of damage to buildings and casualties due to the earthquake caused by the association with the fracture activity that trails east-west on the island of Papua. This earthquake also confirmed that PVMBG would not cause a tsunami because the epicenter of the earthquake was on land.

 

The community is encouraged to remain calm and follow directions and information from the local government and local BPBD. Don't be provoked by irresponsible issues regarding earthquakes and tsunamis. The community must remain vigilant with the occurrence of aftershocks, which are expected to have a smaller power.(k)
