Tuesday morning (22/1), at 6:59 a.m. WIB, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in Southwest West Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. The epicenter is located at a depth of 10 km, located 103 km southwest of Sumba.

The Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Kasbani said that this earthquake did not cause a tsunami. "The occurrence of this earthquake does not cause a tsunami, because the energy is not strong enough to cause deformation under the sea," Kasbani said.

Kasbani also explained that this earthquake was estimated to be associated with subduction activities in the area. "Based on the location of the epicenter and its depth, earthquakes are estimated to be associated with subduction activities in the area," Kasbani explained.

As released by PVMBG, the epicenter is at sea. Areas close to the source of the earthquake are partly composed of Quaternary and Tertiary sedimentary rocks which are unconsolidated so as to strengthen the effects of earthquake shocks. While the greatest intensity of earthquake shocks is felt in areas adjacent to the earthquake center.

"The greatest intensity of earthquake shocks will be felt in areas adjacent to the epicenter, then the intensity will weaken as the distance from the epicenter increases.

Kasbani also appealed to the community to remain calm and follow the directions and information from the local BPBD officers. "People should not be provoked by irresponsible issues regarding the earthquake and tsunami and remain vigilant with the occurrence of aftershocks, which are estimated to have smaller strengths," Kasbani concluded.
