Commemorating the 49th Earth Day, Jonan: Not Just a Ceremony, Nature Conservation

Should be Carried out

On the commemoration of the 49th Earth Day held at the Geology Museum, Bandung, Saturday (27/4), Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM),  Ignasius Jonan stressed that the natural resources that we currently manage and use today are not inherited ancestors, but it is a legacy for the lives of our grandchildren in the future.

"This earth or our nature must be understood is not our ancestors' inheritance because it belongs to God. This is entrusted for our children and grandchildren in the future, so please help us with good care, please don't just carry out ceremonial (Earth Day) only really do nature conservation, "said Jonan.

Jonan added, the activities of the ESDM sector which are directly related to the biggest environmental problems are post-mining reclamation. According to Jonan, this reclamation is a big challenge because the permits issued by mines other than oil and gas are getting more and more licenses issued by the Regional Government.

"Because most mining permits are issued by the Regional Government, therefore I think there needs to be cooperation and if necessary, make very binding regulations so that reclamation activities or post-mining activities including those in oil and gas can minimize environmental damage. I think this is important, "Jonan said.

Jonan also encourages the use of environmentally friendly renewable energy which is the contribution of the ESDM Ministry in environmental conservation. The challenges of implementing renewable energy at this time include struggling with investment problems or price problems.

"If renewable is made into electricity, then the challenge is the price problem, but I believe that maybe in a very short time the price will be more affordable for the community, now I think that should be encouraged," concluded Jonan.

Earth International Day which falls on April 22 is a milestone in an effort to foster awareness of the preservation of the earth. International Earth Day is commemorated since 1971, which is governed by the Earth Day Network and celebrated by more than 175 countries around the world.

"The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources through the Museum of Geology has also participated in commemorating the Earth Day every year through a series of activities to raise awareness of the importance of efforts to preserve the environment. Alhamdulillah in 2019, the Geological Agency still consistently commemorates international Earth Day," said Head of the ESDM Geological Agency, Rudy Suhendar.

The purpose of this routine Earth Day commemoration by the Geological Agency is to educate all Indonesians to take an active role in preserving the environment starting from the family environment and socializing the role of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in sustainable environmental conservation efforts. "Socializing the Museum of Geology as a window of information on the earth for all Indonesian people is also one of the goals of Earth Day," Rudy said.

This year's Earth Day activities are the result of a joint collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Association of Indonesian Geologists (IAGI) and the Regional Indonesian Museum Association (AMIDA) with the support of all stakeholders in the fields of energy and mineral resources (PT. Pertamina, PT. Adaro, PT. Kaltim Prima Coal, PT Antam, PT Bukit Asam, National Electricity Company (PLN), PT Supreme Energy, PT Berau Coal, PT Maeres Soputan Mining, PT Pembangkit Jawa Bali (PJB), PT Indonesia Power, PT Medco E & P Indonesia, PT Adyawinsa Elektrical And Power, SKK Migas).

In addition to the remembrance of the ESDM Community Earth Day in addition to a talk show and joint declaration led by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ignasius Jonan, various events also included, namely National Seminar, Talkshow, Green Energy Exhibition, Launching of Geology Museum Collection Room, Plastic Free Campaign, Competition Fashion Show from waste recycling materials, Educational Games Path Finder, Entertainment Stage, Photo and Culinary Competition.

The 49th Earth Day of the Year carries the theme, "Harmonizing the Earth of Indonesia (Green Energy)". The international theme set by the Earth Day Network for this year is "Protect Our Species", so the Geological Agency makes bees guards named Bumbum as the mascot of the earth this year. (sk)
